Artist
Statement |
I taught myself
how to arc-weld in 1988, while attending
the Art Institute Of Chicago. my landlord
at that time hired me to weld together
a steel storage cage in his fourth floor
loft. My pants caught on fire and I
almost burnt down the building twice.
by the time I had completed that job,
I was ready to start sculpting in metal.
In 1992 after many painstaking years
of searching, I finally discovered the
“ultimate” medium to construct
the human form from. I devised an armature
that conveyed an accurate anatomical
model of the human body. I have since
built more than fifty full-figure sculptures.
Their sizes range from palm-sized to
the largest being twelve feet tall weighing
1 ton With a chair built into its chest.
Furniture and functional art are important
themes in my creative process. Whether
I'm creating functional works or sculptural
pieces the same creative rhythms occur.
These rhythms, which become evident
in the finished works, appear as a style.
My goal is to liberate this style to
take on any form I choose.
Aesthetics, techniques, craftsmanship
and material I use are very crucial
to my artistic integrity. It is only
when this is all working together harmoniously
that my true artistic intention can
shine through. The intention in all
of my artistic creations is to heal
body, mind and spirit, To inspire, To
stimulate and activate positive energy
and to teach about the infinite possibilities
capable within the human experience. |
